It’s not fiction – Capcom fixed Monster Hunter Wilds, until I checked it out to find out.

- Capcom has released a new patch for Monster Hunter Wilds to address performance issues
- The new patch significantly improves performance issues, reducing stutters during gameplay
- The patch made the game more playable on handhelds like the Legion Go S
Houses of Capcom Monster Hunter Wilds (MHW) has been the subject of much criticism from gamers, especially on PC, due to poor performance and optimization affecting all system configurations, but significant improvements have been made.
Thanks to the new functionality, Monster Hunter Wilds now uses consistent and stable frame rates on both high and low PC settings. The patch also comes with a new CPU options menu, which allows users to adjust settings such as processor-heavy game effects.
This comes after a Reddit user discovered a bug with the game constantly doing DLC checks, effectively leading to worse performance with frustrating stutters in hub areas and a lack of smoothness during tight game sequences.
Now, with the many fixes officially used by Capcom, the difference is clear, with which is important to reduce micro stutters. If a huge boost to positive reviews on Steam isn’t proof enough for you, then maybe my tests should do the trick.
Frame rates are stable, but don’t expect a dramatic increase
I tested the new patch on my main gaming PC, equipped with an Nvidia GeForce RTX 4080 Super, an AMD Ryzen 7 5700X3D processor, and 32GB of RAM (yes, I know I’m lucky), and on a Lenovo Legion Go S Z1 I’m holding in my hand.
First things first: when you go back MHW expecting a big increase in frame rate, you might be a little worried. While there will be frame rate jumps, especially if you’ve been playing on a low-end system, there’s a big impact to be aware of.
Instead, this update improves performance by the best 1%, which is the lowest possible frame rate your game is hitting, or in other words, the lowest frame rate 1% of the time. It also greatly reduces VRAM usage, perfect for 8GB GPUs.
On my main rig at 4K with high graphics settings, DLSS 4.5 Performance, and no Frame Generation enabled, I was able to maintain 60 fps most of the time during large battles, with a few dips in the 50 fps range.
When playing with my usual resolution of ultrawide 3440×1440, I could use DLSS Quality 4.5, and manage 62 to 75 fps (and much more in some regions), which is a great achievement for this game without relying on the frame type.
Apart from a small performance loss (on RTX 40 or 50 series GPU) from using DLSS 4.5, you can expect more frames in these conditions, but what was more important was that the 1% drop was within the same range as the base frame rates – and that eliminates the stutters that have been bothering the game experience.
On my Legion Go S, using the low graphics preset at 1200p resolution, with Intel XeSS or FSR 3 Balanced enabled, I managed 40 fps during exploration and combat, and 30 fps in previously CPU-heavy areas (eg, Grand Hub).
Remember, this wasn’t possible before on this Z1 Extreme configuration, as it was effectively unplayable due to stuttering and frame rate drops, both of which aren’t a problem after Capcom’s patch.
Fortunately, enabling the frame rate works as intended on both my gaming PC and handheld, doubling the frame rate without the game feeling distorted. With new CPU options available, you can produce even better performance results by reducing the CPU load to use more GPU.
More work is needed, as I feel the framerates can be a bit high in cases using DLSS or FSR Performance upscaling modes. However, from where MHWCapcom’s performance started at launch, this is a huge improvement, and luckily, Capcom still has patches of performance planned. Monster Hunter Wilds run accordingly.
